Tuya Bolor is a UK-based mixed media artist born and raised in Mongolia. Her work explores themes of cultural identity, memory, transformation, and the experience of living between two worlds. Through a combination of acrylic painting, textiles, punch needle embroidery, and collage, she creates layered visual narratives that bridge traditional Mongolian heritage with contemporary artistic expression

Artistic Approach & Process

Tuya’s work is deeply rooted in tactile storytelling, where fabric, thread, and paint become vessels for exploring personal and collective histories. She often integrates punch needle embroidery with mixed media techniques, allowing textures to shape the emotional depth of her compositions. Each stitch and material choice reflects the act of reconstruction—of memory, identity, and belonging. Her creative process is intuitive, often starting with an emotion or memory that evolves into a layered visual narrative. Inspired by Mongolian craftsmanship, nomadic traditions, and the experience of navigating two cultures, her work speaks to the complexities of heritage and adaptation.

Themes & Inspirations

At the heart of Tuya’s practice is an exploration of womanhood, displacement, and resilience. As a mother, she weaves the weight of responsibility and transformation into her work, reflecting the dual experience of nurturing and self-discovery. Mongolian motifs—such as traditional textiles, patterns, and historical symbols—merge with contemporary Western influences, creating a dialogue between past and present. Her recent project, Mongol Khatan, highlights the strength and beauty of Mongolian women, using punch needle embroidery to celebrate craft as an artistic medium. By combining these elements, she challenges perceptions of tradition and modernity, redefining cultural narratives through texture and form.

Philosophy

For Tuya, art is more than a form of expression—it is a bridge between past and present, home and afar. Each piece tells a story, woven through fabric and colour, inviting viewers to touch, feel, and connect with the emotions embedded in the layers. Through her work, she seeks to create a space where personal and cultural histories coexist, continuously evolving, just like identity itself.
